Southern Hills, or Wellshire, is located in the 80210 zip code. The area borders at South St. Paul St. on the east, University Boulevard on the west, E. Flora Place on the south, and E. Yale Avenue on the north. A rough estimate indicates about 570 homes were built here. This neighborhood feeds into the highly sought after Slavens School for public elementary through 8th grade. While still private in feel, this neighborhood is still conveniently located in proximity to the City of Denver and has fantastic city access by way of University and Colorado Boulevard. On the north side of Yale is McWilliam’s Park, named after justice Robert Hugh McWilliams. It’s also known in the neighborhood as “dinosaur park”.

Between 1899 and 1913 the land in this area was owned by an individual named Jay Morton, of which not much is known about. The homes in Southern Hills were built in the late 50’s and early 60’s. Two builders named Consolidated Homes and Paramount Homes were the neighborhood filers for the area. Contractor Aubrey Harrison built most of the homes here, and his son Lynn built homes in Greenwood Village and Cherry Hills Village, and his grandson Scott is now a 3rd generation builder in the area.
There was an active Garden Club in Southern Hills in the 60’s until the early 90’s. They placed the Southern Hills wrought iron signs, which where originally green and gold but are now black. They also donated several trees to Slavens Elementary.
University Hills Shopping Center is also part of the neighborhood to the east and at the time featured a Macy’s Department Store.
