The Second H.B. Wolff Neighborhood

Lynwood is a Mid-Century Modern neighborhood in Virginia Village, bound by Holly Street to the West, Jewell Avenue to the South, Jasmine Street to the West, and Mexico Avenue to the North. The neighborhood is walking distance to neighborhood hot spot Esthers, as well as the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning. The neighborhood enjoys great access to the I-25 freeway, as well as shops and restaurants in Glendale, and along Colorado and Monaco Boulevards. It also has great access to the Cherry Creek bike path and numerous small parks.

The Story

After a wildly successful Krisana Park neighborhood, H.B. Wolff and his son, along with architect Frenchie Gratts, designed a second Eichler style neighborhood in Virginia Village, this time east of Holly Street. The neighborhood was comprised of 80 homes built between 1956 and 1959. The original neighborhood design was supposed to go all the way out east to Monaco Boulevard, but at some point in time it was determined that the VA lending on homes of Mid-Century Modern design was simply too risky, resulting in the rest of that land being developed as simple brick ranch homes.

Because this neighborhood was H.B. Wolff’s second neighborhood designed, there were a few different styles of homes that don’t exist in Krisana Park, specifically the A-frame models and tri-level homes. Many of these homes were larger, had more square footage, and some have tiered pathways leading up to the homes from the street. Lynwood is also a name of a California suburb in Los Angeles County.
