The Iconic Architecture of Applewood West

Applewood West is home to some of the most architecturally significant Mid-Century Modern residences in the region, with many of the most notable homes lining Foothill Road. This winding, single-lane road is home to a collection of iconic homes that reflect the era’s bold design and innovation. When driving through, take caution and admire the stunning homes that have stood the test of time.

The Story of Applewood Mesa

The origins of this unique community date back to 1933, when Myron T. Bunger purchased an 80-acre apple orchard with the intent of cultivating the land. However, when he retired in 1953, instead of relocating for work in Washington D.C., Bunger recognized the investment potential of his land. Teaming up with his engineer brothers, Mill and Howard Bunger, they launched Applewood Mesa Realty Company, aiming to develop a high-end residential subdivision. Since the area had no existing water or sewage infrastructure, they also formed a business to secure water rights and provide these essential services.

By 1956, construction had begun on Applewood Mesa, with 600 half-acre home sites available. At the time, these homes ranged in price from $25,000 to $85,000, a considerable sum compared to the national average home price of $10,391 in 1956.

As demand for homes in Applewood grew, the Bunger brothers expanded their vision, developing additional neighborhoods, including Applewood Heights, Grove, Glen, and View, all falling under the larger Applewood umbrella. The area quickly became a desirable location for young professionals and families. In the 1960s and 1970s, Applewood Knolls was added by developer Michael Leprino, further cementing the area’s reputation as one of Golden’s premier neighborhoods.

The Evolution of Applewood: A Shopping Destination Emerges

Beyond residential development, Applewood also saw the creation of a shopping and lifestyle hub. In the 1960s, developer Conrad R. Becker spearheaded the construction of a 38-acre shopping village adjacent to Applewood and the newly developed I-70 corridor in Jefferson County. Becker envisioned this shopping district as a vital retail and entertainment hub for Applewood, Table Mesa, and the Golden vicinity. The Eaker Department Store, a well-known regional retailer, was the first to sign a lease, with plans for the shopping center to accommodate 40 to 50 stores—a massive project for its time.
